I want to consider moving over an entire linkedin group to the ECN, what is the process?

The members of several of the linkedin groups I manage are concerned about the direction linkedin features have gone and the acquisition by Microsoft.  They have request that we move the group somewhere else that have features for discussions, Q&A, and a place to post articles like the knowledge board.  An ECN supports all of these features but I don't know how to get all the linkedin members registered and only the ECN fast.

Thanks Ray for the interest. The uncertainty you describe about LinkedIn Groups is a concern of many people and many of the Groups have become barren wastelands. Furthermore, others have failed because LinkedIn exerted very little quality control during the initial formation of their Group feature.  

To move your LinkedIn Group to an ECN Group - there are a couple of approaches:   
 
A: Create an ECN Group.  (Public / Semi-Private / Private).

Note that if the Group is Private, it will not be listed anywhere. Semi-Private Groups are listed in the ECN's Group directory but the content is only accessible to members. 

B: Export your LinkedIn Group member email addresses to a CSV file.

Note: LinkedIn allows you to export the email addresses of all your contacts but it's not an automatic process. You have to request it and then they email it to you later. To date, they don't allow you to filter via Groups so unfortunately, you'll have to manually go through to identify which members of your LinkedIn Group that you'd like to authorize as members of your ECN Group.

C: Upload your contacts to your ECN Group invitation panel (or copy and paste email addresses into the invitation box of the ECN Group), add a personal message, hit submit/send. Your contact will receive email authorizations notifying them of the invitiation to join your Group. 
 
D: To increase interest, you may want to send them an email from your personal email account (or via LinkedIn Group messaging) to tell them that you're moving the discussion to an ECN Group. After you've already sent them invitations via ECN system, you can just point them to the link to the registration page of the ECN and after they create an account and login -- they'll see the invitation by you to join the Group

E: Your invited Group members will need to confirm their email addresses when they create an ECN account. They can import many elements of their LinkedIn account to their ECN Profile which makes it a little easier for them to build their profile(s). 

That's it. Now you and your colleagues can be off and running and can take advantage of the many features available via ECN Groups.

Can an ECN be used as an Online Speakers Bureau? If yes, what sort of staff resources from my asssociation would be required to support it?

Yes. A Brainsy Expert Calling Network or “ECN” is a full-featured, next generation social media platform and at the core are features and benefits critical to having an off-the-shelf Online Speakers Bureau under your association’s brand.

1) DIRECTORY: Each ECN has a Directory of speakers or subject matter experts who create their own ECN profiles (much like someone creates their own LinkedIn or Facebook profile).     

2) RATE TRANSPARENCY: Speakers set their own rate for participating in a paid phone call of up to 1 hour in duration and there’s complete transparency of those rates.

3) AUTOMATED TRANSACTIONS: All call transactions are  conducted through the ECN platform and there’s zero association staff time required to help manage any transactions.  

4)  BILLING AND PAYOUTS: All billing, settlement, and payout to the Speaker are handled through the ECN platform. Again, no association staff time required to support this process.   

5) TECHNOLOGY KNOW-HOW NOT REQUIRED: The ECN is full featured yet easy to administrate and requires no technology expertise or input on behalf of the association.

6) MARKETING AND PROMOTION: Within each ECN is a range marketing and promotional features that Speakers can use to manage and cultivate followers or fans.

7) INTEGRATION WITH LEGACY SOCIAL MEDIA: Many speakers have their own social media presence using one of the monolithic and legacy social media services (eg. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook). Long before Silicon Valley tech companies came out with mass market platforms for social media, trade associations and professional societies existed as the original social network. There are approximately 90,000 of these trade and professional societies in the US and they exist today as vibrant communities where people come together to share knowledge and expertise, to seek career and professional development, to meet vendors or clients, and to advocate for their industries.  We believe the Expert Calling Network (ECN) platform is a perfect complement to the mission of an association and therefore, have created a win-win business model to partner with these organizations to help advance their success. We believe that by working successfully with these organizations, we'll have a strong foundation and will have created a company built to last.

Thanks for the inquiry and your question is clearly directed to the fact that Brainsy's ECN platform powers the Cannabis Expert Calling Network (ECN) of the National Cannabis Industry Association or the "Cannabis ECN." By "risky" I'm guessing you mean legal or reputational risk and on both counts I'd say "no, it's not." The National Cannabis Industry Association is a formally organized trade association that is national in scope and mandated with advancing the interests of the "legitimate and responsible cannabis industry." Although cannabis remains a controlled substance at the federal level, a growing number of states are allowing for the use of medical and/or adult-use cannabis. Since these regulations vary by state and even at the municipal level, it creates a challenging environment for legitimate businesses seeking to operate. Thus, we feel an ECN is highly relevant for businesses and entrepreneurs seeking to benefit from the knowledge of others that are successfully operating (in compliance with laws) in this industry.

Your association selects the experts for your branded ECN and you can set a selection criteria that supports your association’s strategic objecties. Many associations consider one of several criteria (or a combination thereof) when deciding on eligiblity for their ECN.

1) Open to all Membership: Some associations are focused on increasing membership so they make membership the sole criteria to become an ECN expert. In fact, we’ve been told of members joining the association for the sole member benefit of inclusion into the association’s ECN. This approach allows for the greatest number of expert participants and can help increase online search and discovery.

2) Based on Certification: Associations that have a certification or accreditation program in place may opt to authorize only those members with certain association granted credentials.

3) Open to Supplier/Vendors: Associations may authorize suppliers or vendors to become experts in their ECN. Often these suppliers or vendors will see their participation as an effective mechanism for lead generation.

4) Curated Experts: Some associations my decide to curate their experts from known industry thought leaders, board members, or using some other criteria non-membership derived criteria.

Depending on the business model you use to engage Brainsy, you can authorize ECN expert invitations directly from your administrative control panel or have Brainsy staff issue the invitations. Regardless of what your organization decides, we recommend you openly disclose the criteria you use to select someone to participate in the ECN in the role of expert.

Essentially, when you reserve a person's time for a call, you are buying just that -- their time -- and we can guarantee that you get the allotted time during the ECN call. You will not be charged for that time until your call is completed. However, the actual content of the call depends on many factors and so the ECN system does not allow for refunds.

If we could put the expert's time back on the shelf for the next customer that comes along, then we would do so and be in a position to issue refunds. (Of course, if we could do THAT, we might be in a whole different line of business altogether). Most ECNs offer a Q&A feature so if you'd like to warm up to a particular expert and understand more than you can glean by looking at the expert's profile, you might want to start by posting a public question to the expert on the "Ask a Question" section of the expert's profile.

In the abstract, ECNs are knowledge sharing platforms and associations are the original social networks. ECNs help facilitate member <=> member or member => non-member knowledge sharing. Furthermore, one key component of the ECN platform is transactional calling which gets your members paid for sharing their knowledge over the phone. And when that happens, everybody wins in a very concrete way  - your members (revenue), your association (non-dues revenue) and the consumer seeking information. Other important, but less measurable,  benefits for your association include member value, relevance, thought leadership, and member engagement. What rate should I charge for an ECN call?

I've been invited to be an expert in the Open ECN expert calling network but I'm struggling to set my rate. What is a good practice for setting rates?

Thanks. This is a common question that we hear. 

Some experts price below their “market" rate as an “introductory” with the goal of generating leads for bigger business opportunities. Others price at what they believe the “market” will bear. Regardless of your motivation, we encourage experts to price so that a bit of discounting occurs for calls of longer duration. Outlined below are tracks that follow a discounting strateg. These are based on our three standard time intervals of 15 minutes, 30 minutes, and 60 minutes:


Track 1:   $15-$25-$40
Track 2:   $20-$30-$50
Track 3:   $25-$40-$65
Track 4:   $30-$55-$90
Track 5:   $40-$75-$120
Track 6:   $50-90-$150
Track 7:   $75-$120-$200
Track 8:   $100-$165-$275
Track 9:   $150-$240-$390
Track 10: $350-$600-$1,000

Other people may decide to price linearly. e.g. $50-$100-$200.  

Regardless of how to decide to price, we recommend you be prepared to adjust rates on occassion if you find the volume of call requests doesn't match your expectations (e.g. increase rate to reduce # of requests or reduce rate to increase # of call requests.)

In my case, I usually set my price to encourage shorter duration calls so people are willing to take a chance and test the ECN.

Great question. First, let’s frame the problem. Futurist John Naisbitt is credited with stating that “We are drowning in information but starved for knowledge.”  The internet is a wonderful tool for accessing information but the amount of content available has exploded. Look at the exponential growth in internet traffic as a benchmark. In 1997, the year that Amazon went public, global internet traffic was 100 GB per hour. By 2019, it is expected to reach 51,794 GB per second. That's right, per SECOND. Although search engine companies, like Google, continue to get more powerful, I believe they are losing ground to companies bringing “content marketing” into the mainstream and thus making it increasingly difficult to cut through content clutter. If you’ve ever found yourself exasperated, search fatigued, and thought “I wish I could just talk to someone!” then you’ve experienced the pain that Brainsy is working to solve. No matter how sophisticated big data and “search” get, live, one-on-one discussions will often remain the best way to share and transfer knowledge and human judgement. Our goal with Brainsy is to build technology that reduces transaction barriers and that makes personalized, one-on-one knowledge exchange more accessible to everyone.

Thanks for asking. User experience (UX) design is critical to software development but it is hard to intuit in a vacuum. Users sometimes act in ways that you might expect but they almost always act in ways that you don't. Therefore, I'm a big fan of developing a skeleton of features and then closely monitoring user interaction to rapidly iterate the software in response to real world user feedback. Initially, that "real world" feedback is from in-house users in a development environment. Later, and after releasing features so they can be accessed by your customers, close monitoring and rapid iteration is even more important since poor user experience can reflect negatively on your brand.
